Is Jesus God
Christians: Jesus is "fully God and fully man"
Muslims: Jesus is a great prophet
Are we fighting over 23 chromosomes?!
Where Did This Belief Come From?
This issue has been debated for 2000 years and the argument has not gone away...Why?
- If there is an obvious, clear conclusion about this topic...why is it still being debated?
In the early fourth century, (more than 300 year after Jesus died) the Roman emperor Constantine convened a group of several hundred in Nicea, charged to resolve the nature of Jesus "once & for all".
- One group wanted to describe Jesus as homoiousios, meaning “of a similar substance” to God.
- Other group insisted Jesus be described as homoousios, meaning “of the same substance” as God.
Constantine decided on homoousios & thus today we have the Nicene Creed, which declares that Jesus is of "the same substance as God.”
Divine Nature vs. Human Nature?
We know that Jesus was human, but what part of Jesus if any, could be considered Divine?
We as humans are defined in 3 distinct parts - that is body, soul and spirit.
While our bodies are temporal, our soul and spirit are eternal.
Christians often refer to Jesus as "fully God and fully human" but what does this mean?
- What does the Bible & Qur’an really say?
It may help to differentiate his human attributes with divine attributes.
- Could most Muslims and Christians agree that the flesh and body of the man Jesus was, at least in part, the contribution of Mary was physical and distinctly human? For example - the hair, fingers or skin of Jesus; were these divine or human?
- Could most Muslims and Christians also agree that Jesus had a number of what could be defined as "divine attributes"? For example - Jesus' spirit was unique as the Spirit of God. He was also the Word of God, Messiah and supernaturally conceived, etc.
Christians believe Jesus died on the cross. What part of his nature would they say died? His human nature or his divine nature?
Do Christians really believe that Jehovah (YHWH), an eternal God died on a cross?
- Jesus said on the cross; "Father into your hands I commit My spirit" Luke 23:46
- Some theologians suggest that YHWH is Spirit and Spirit cannot die nor be killed.
The human source and the divine source:
- The virgin Mary likely contributed to Jesus' human nature as his human mother.
- On the other hand, the Spirit of God, breathed life into the virgin Mary that led to the supernatural conception of Jesus. Is this what contributed to the unique and divine attributes of Jesus?
From The Bible:
- The Angel Gabriel said to Mary “For behold, you will receive a conception and give birth (Aramaic: eldiyn a unique feminine word implying there was no man involved) to a son, and you will call his name Jesus (Hebrew: Yasuah).” Luke 1:31
- "...The Holy Spirit will come, and the power of the Highest will rest upon you..." Luke 1:35
Thus, the conception is depicted between the Holy Spirit (breath of God) and Mary not Joseph nor God coming down in a fleshly form.
From The Qur’an:
- “She said, “Lord, how can I have a boy when no man has ever touched me?” He said, “God creates what He wills, when He decides a matter, He simply says to it: 'Be!’ and then it is.” Sura 3:47
- “We breathed into her from our spirit and made her and her son a sign for all people” Sura 21:91 and 66:12.
The Qur'an presents the nearly identical story of conception of Jesus.
Divine attributes of Jesus that Muslims & Christians should find agreement:
- Word of God
- Spirit of God
- Messiah
- Word of truth
- The peace
- Pure or sinless
Conclusions:
All of these attributes are uniquely applied to Jesus. Muslims often refer to Jesus as "just another prophet"...what other prophets are associated with these divine attributes?
- But does this make Jesus God?
- Can the complete nature of God be contained in a human form?
- With all of these unique attributes...is it possible that Jesus is, "just another prophet"?
Was The Nicene Council Of Men Correct?
Humans do not have all the answers.
We simply cannot hope to comprehend the magnitude or complete nature of an eternal, all knowing God, who is the creator of all things.
- Qur’an 2;16 - And Allah Knows, while you know not.
- 1 Corinthians 13:12 - Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely."
For mankind, Is it possible to have a 100% perfect answer when it comes to God's creation, God's plan and the complete nature of God?
- Our thoughts and conclusions are subject to error.
- Man is finite...God is infinite.
What Did Jesus Teach Us About God?
Jesus instructed His disciples to worship God:
- "Jesus replied, 'The Scriptures say, 'You must worship the LORD (Aramaic; MarYah) your God and serve only him.'" Luke 4:8
- "They were only asked to worship God alone,,," Qur'an 98:5
Jesus prayed to God in Heaven:
- "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." Mark 1:35
- "One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night." Luke 6:12
- Jesus prayed. What does that mean to you?
Did Jesus differentiate Himself from "God in Heaven"?
- "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good except for God alone. Mark 10:18
- "Jesus said, "This is how you should pray: Our Father who is in Heaven...Luke 11:2
- "I and the Father are one (Aramaic: 'one accord')." John 10:30
Jesus came to do God's will...not His own:
- For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. John 6:38
Where Is Jesus Now?
According to the Bible and the Qur'an, Jesus is near to God in heaven:
- "When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand." Mark 16:19
- "...Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, he will be highly distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and brought near to God." Qur'an 3:45
- "God said, Jesus I will cause you to die and raise you up to me..." Qur'an 3:55
Conclusions:
- According to the Bible and the Qur'an; Jesus is near to God in Heaven.
- If Jesus is next to God in Heaven...what does that imply?
A Name Above All Names?
Christians pray "in the name of Jesus" and say that this is "the name above all names"...but why is there emphasis on his name?
"Jesus (English) and Isa (Arabic)"
- These names do not reflect the actual Hebrew name Jesus used.
Jesus' actual name is "Ye'shua:"
- His name means, "Yahweh' Salvation" or simply "God's salvation."
The Ye' part of "Ye'shua" is a contraction for YHWH; the sacred name of God.
- The name of God is divine. YHWH or Yahweh. It is known as the "Tetragrammaton". It means "the existent One" or the "to be" verb.
- Similar understanding to the Qur'an's statement when Allah wills something by saying kunfyakun "be and it is".
- Does Jesus shares a divine attribute having the sacred name of God within His name?
If Jesus shares the very name of God, contained in the meaning of Jesus' name (God Saves) ...does that make Jesus God?
What Difference Does It Make?!
Does YHWH have human body?
- Muslims: have a hard time believing that God had to eat and sleep. God has no beginning and no end so how could God be born and die?
- Christians: what part of Jesus is divine? The Spirit of God? The Word of God?
The virgin Mary contributed to Jesus' physical body and God contributed the divine ingredients including His Spirit and Word.
But Wait...Jesus Is Lord?
The dictionary defines "lord" as: "someone or something having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler."
Therefore, saying; "Jesus is Lord" does not in itself mean that Jesus is divine or God.
For some undisclosed reason the sacred name of God was hidden in translation:
God's sacred name was translated as "LORD" in English at times with all capital letters.
The title of "LORD" has been mixed and confused with other "Lords" (without capital letters).
The Hebrew sacred name of God is YHWH. It appears in the Old Testament nearly 7,000 times but was translated most every time to Greek and then English as "LORD" (all capital letters). Strong's #3068
The title "Lord" itself does not typically indicate divinity.
The sacred name of God YHWH is used to refer to the one and only God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Ishmael.
The Hebrew word for "Lord" adony is not necessarily a divine title and usually means "master". Strong's #136
This easily overlooked translation gave a divine stature to “lord” in the English Bible (which was not the original intent).
The correct word used for “lord” in the Old Testament is adony which is used to refer to humans and often in reference to YHWH.
The Aramaic word used in the New Testament for Lord is mar.
Jesus is described as mar (master or Lord).
However when mentioning God the term “Master” consistently changes to MarYah (or Master YHWH) reflecting back to the Old Testament Hebrew word.
Examples:
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD (YHWH) our God, the LORD (YHWH) is one." Deut. 6:4
"The LORD (YHWH) said to my Lord (adony), "Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies," Psalms 110:1
Psalms 110:1 translates as; "YHWH said to David's master (adony) (i.e., Jesus the coming Messiah) sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies."
Conclusions:
Saying "Jesus is Lord" means that "Jesus is master" or "Jesus is the authority to follow".
The Bible says Jesus is "The Way" which can mean "the way to life" or even "the way to God."
- When the Qur'an refers to Jesus as "The Straight Path," can this mean "the way to God" or even "the right way to follow"?
God's Spirit Within Us....Are We Gods?
Are we all gods? Are we no different than Jesus?
We have God's spirit within us, but we are NOT the Spirit of God.
We have our own unique and eternal soul and spirit.
The spirit that was within Jesus was the very Spirit of God.
Examples:
“Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.” Luke 4:1
“We gave Jesus, the son of Mary clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit.” Qur’an 2:253
This difference is extremely significant.
The spiritual nature and uniqueness of Jesus, being the Spirit of God ...Is this is a uniquely divine trait?
"In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Messiah Jesus: Who, being in very pattern/image of God, did not consider having similarity with God something to be used to his own advantage. rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness." Philippians 2: 5-7
Using Aramaic one can have a better understanding of this verse:
"Who, being in the form (image) of God, did not consider it robbery to be equivalent (a copy of, or in one accord) with God."
"Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”
“We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” John 10: 33-38
This is an accusation the religious leaders made in response to the teachings of Jesus.
The religious leaders attempted to trick Jesus and falsely accused Him regularly.
The word used for "God" ("claim to be God,") in the Aramaic is alaha "the divine" or the general word used for "god". This word is not exclusively associated with the Sacred name YHWH.
Much like the English word "god" it can also be attributed to false gods.
Jesus then quotes one of the most provocative verses in the Bible:
Jesus answered them quoting Psalms 82:6
“Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods” ’ ?
This verse has puzzled scholars for centuries. However a close look at the Semitic meaning of "god" may reveal answers.
The Hebrew word used In Psalms 82:6 for "you are gods" (eloha) is the same Aramaic word (alaha) used in John 10:34. It means "divine" or "god" and can also mean "god like", "angels" or even "rulers" and "judges". (See Strong's H430).
The next verse John 10:35 may help explain this puzzle "If he called them gods, because the Word of God was with them.."
These verses seem to be suggesting that humans can be considered "rulers", or in some way "god-like" (divine). Jesus says this because the "Word of God was with us."
If we are considered "god-like" merely because the "Word was with us" what does that make Jesus?
Both Muslims and Christians generally accept the Word was not only with Jesus, but that he was the very "Word of God."
Conclusions:
While we are a creation of the divine (God) and are "made in the image of God", that does not mean we are (God)YHWH.
How does this apply to Jesus the Messiah?
What Is The Difference Between God And Yahweh?
- The word "God" is a title.
- "Allah" is also a title for "The God."
- Yahweh or YHWH is a sacred & personal name.
Did Jesus Ever Teach That He Was God?
The Bible Examples:
“For I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” John 8:29
“The son can do nothing by himself, He can only do what he sees the father doing.” John 5:19
The Qur'an Examples:
(Jesus) saying "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will create a bird like for you from clay and breathe into it and by God's permission it will be a bird. I, by God's permission heal men born blind, and lepers and give life to the dead.' Qur’an 3:49
Has anyone ever “seen” God?
“No one has seen the Father (YHWH) except the one (Jesus) who is from God; only he has seen the Father.” Did Jesus really physically “see” YHWH? John 6:46
The Aramaic word for “seen” in John is the cognate (same) as the Hebrew for “vision”, and also means “divine presence” [Shechinah] “to experience” or “understand”.
If Jesus is human...why is He the only one who has seen or experienced God?
Was this idea meant for 2,000 years ago or is true today?
Other examples:
"Thomas replied, 'My Lord (Master) and my God!' Jesus said to him, 'because you have seen Me, you have believed...'" John 20: 28-29
The word used for "my God" in Aramaic/Hebrew is indeed referring to “God.” Some interpret this as an expression of Thomas in amazement to Jesus as “Master” and a praise to “God” for the miracle Thomas was witnessing.
Is Thomas worshiping Jesus as God? Or is he praising God for what God did raising Jesus from the dead?
Jesus Said Before Abraham "I Am"?
Does this mean Jesus was claiming to be God?
"Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" John 8:58
What part of Jesus existed before Abraham?
The body of Jesus?
The Word of God?
The Spirit of God?
Summary for Common Ground:
The divine attributes (Word of God, Spirit of God) of Jesus existed at the beginning of creation...However, the "Word" had not yet become flesh yet. Jesus the Messiah had yet to be born.
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14
Attributes Of God?
God is eternal and the creator of all things.
God has always existed, He has no beginning and no end.
God is constant and unchanging.
"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom." Isaiah 40:28
"LORD (YHWH), are you not from everlasting? My God, my Holy One, you will never die..." Habakkuk 1:12
“Say: He is God who is Uniquely Singular, Who is Eternal, (the uncaused, cause of all that exists), Who has not given birth nor is He born and there is no equivalent to Him." Qur'an 112: 1-4
Jesus was born and Jesus died...but what part...??
His flesh? His spirit?
God does not change:
"God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change..." Psalms 55:19a
Conclusions:
Can God die? Can God be born?

It is important to clarify and differentiate the human nature compared to the divine nature of Jesus.
Muslims believe that worshiping Jesus as God is a heresy because God alone should be worshiped.
This issue is directly linked to the trinity doctrine and the misunderstanding that this defines "3 equal gods."
Jesus has a number of unique and divine traits of and from God... but does that make Jesus the same as YHWH?
The Messiah Jesus - unlike any other:
The Spirit of God supernaturally conceived Jesus.
That same Spirit of God was with Him and guided Him throughout his life.
The virgin Mary contributed to Jesus' human nature.
The Spirit of God contributed to Jesus' divine nature.
- The Bible and the Qur'an are in agreement about the unique and divine attributes of Jesus.
Jesus’s nature is utterly unique:
Is Jesus the Messiah an ordinary flesh-and-blood human being?
Does Jesus have a divine nature?
- Is Jesus made of flesh & blood like the rest of us... or is he animated by the very Spirit of God?
If a Muslim does not believe Jesus was God:
Would it make him any less important as the Messiah?
Would it change his role or his uniqueness?
- Would it make him just the same as us?
Muslims & Christians CAN agree:
Jesus had all of the unique and divine attributes of God within Him.
Jesus is the Word of God
Jesus is the Spirit of God.
Jesus is the Word of Truth
If we want to get close to God, we need to follow Jesus.
Jesus does not belong to one religion or one culture.
Does following Jesus as Lord (or master), as Messiah and as "the way" or "straight path" to God mean that you must reject your birth "religion" and adopt another "religion?"
- Jesus’ name means that “God Saves.”
